At present does still sell solar panels and battery storage in many countries including  Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

However, the current list does not include the UK and has officially halted their sale in the country.

Why did IKEA stop selling solar panels in the UK?

IKEA first launched their solar panels and battery systems range in 2017 and halted their sale in 2019.

They halted the sale largely due to UK Government’s Feed In Tariff coming to a close.

The Feed-in tariff was launched by the UK government to incentivise households to adopt solar.

The feed-in tariff paid households for every kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity they generated using renewable methods like solar panels.

In addition, households were also able to sell any excess energy generated to the National Grid.

During it’s course, the feed-in tariff was a triumph and many households in the UK did adopt solar.

Sadly the scheme concluded in April 2019, but those who did sign up at the time are able to take advantage of for 20 years, at which point it will expire.

As a result of this IKEA made the decision to end the sale of their solar panel range in the UK.

IKEA made the following statement regarding the end of their solar range in 2019:

“At this point in time, we do not feel that the majority of new home solar customers will get a good deal, making the commercial offer unviable until the UK solar market landscape improves.”

IKEA seems to be focused on selling renewables including solar in markets they feel makes financial sense for their customers.

However, as of 2022 and the launch of the new Smart Export Guarantee, solar is once again a profitable and worthwhile exercise for domestic energy users in the UK.

Energy Guide reached out IKEA for comment on their UK solar panels plans and received the following response:

“At present, IKEA UK has no plans to re-launch or offer solar panels to the UK market”.

So at present it pretty bad news if you had your heart set on getting your home fitted with IKEA solar panels.

The good news is that there are plenty of options still available.

How much do IKEA solar panels cost?

In the UK, there are currently no prices available since they stopped their sale back in 2019.

But traditionally, the IKEA brand offered solar panels and batteries at a considerably cheaper rate than rival solar companies.

For example, IKEA currently offer a 6kw solar array kit for around 3,400 euros.

IKEA also offer a range of solar batteries on the continent too, with their standard solar batter costing 3,500 euros.

This is exactly why IKEA made the decision as in different regions the breakeven point or point you will pay for the initial solar installation is different.

On the continent these prices mean it takes around 3 to 4 years to pay for the solar, while in the UK it takes around 10 years.
