Recent data from RenewableUK has shown that the UK’s wind capacity has surpassed 30 gigawatts.

At 30.23 gigawatts, the UK’s wind capacity is sufficient to power approximately 26 million homes. This represents a doubling of the nation’s wind capacity in a seven-year-time frame.

This achievement was noted in a recent publication from RenewableUK with tracking via EnergyPulse.

The UK’s wind capacity milestones over the years:

  • 2005 – 1 gigawatt
  • 2010 – 5 gigawatt
  • 2013 – 10 gigawatt
  • 2017 – 15 gigawatt
  • 2024 – 30 gigawatt

The current figure in excess of 30 gigawatts applies to the combined total capacity of offshore and onshore wind. There is currently a split of near 50-50 between these two

Looking at future projections, with the UK’s offshore wind power capacity standing at 14.8 gigawatts, it is, according to Statista, expected to surpass 30 gigawatts in 2029.
