131 Government Clean Energy Projects Secured Through AR6

Last updated: September 4, 2024

Through the sixth annual renewables auction, the government has landed contracts for 131 new clean energy projects.

The AR6 auction is a £1.5 billion auction that has secured Contracts for Difference with companies spanning a range of renewable energy industries. These include solar, offshore wind, onshore wind and tidal power.

These projects may offer an electricity capacity that would be sufficient to power as many as 11 million homes. With 131 projects, this is a record-breaking figure for the government renewables auction.

According to RenewableUK, the 131 projects will garner more than £14 billion of fresh private investment.

Among the projects secured via AR6 include offshore wind farms Hornsea 3 and Hornsea 4, each to be located off the coast of Yorkshire.

Most of the projects were, unsurprisingly, oriented toward solar energy. In total, the auction has secured 93 solar projects. These projects are expected to increase the national solar capacity by one-fifth with the 93 projects offering about 3.3 gigawatts of capacity.

With the government aiming for 100% clean and affordable electricity by 2030, these wide-ranging renewable projects have the potential to make a significant push toward this goal.
