CGEN Engineering, a new company spawned from the University of Edinburgh (i.e. a university spinout company) recently launched a modular generator system to help lower renewables costs.

More specifically, the company’s modular generator system will look to reduce the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of offshore renewables’ by between 10% and 15%.

The University of Edinburgh has said that the system is suitable for tidal, wave and wind instalments alike.

It would achieve its results by lowering down times and helping to make energy infrastructure last longer. In fact, reports suggest that the system can extend the lifespan of installations by 30-40%, while maintenance costs could fall by between 50% and 70%.

It has also been reported that the new technology has been tested covering power scales ranging from 10 Kilowatts to 1 Megawatt.

Many UK trends are already pushing toward increased use of renewables such as with the government introducing the GB Energy initiative and aiming for 100% clean and affordable electricity by 2030 and plans or expectations for increased investment in the private sector.
