Encyclis Pilots Eco-Friendly Energy From Waste At Leicestershire Facility

Last updated: October 6, 2024

With facilities in the UK and Ireland, Encyclis is a major ‘energy from waste’ operator that has recently completed a pilot programme using hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) during the process.

Their Leicestershire-based Newhurst Energy Recovery Facility swapped out diesel for sustainable and 100% renewable HVO during the energy from waste process.

The facility requires a fuel source to power its components including its emergency generator, auxiliary burners and plant vehicles.

Energy from waste is already considered a low-carbon source of electricity. However, Encyclis’ pilot programme could help kick start a push to make this energy source 100% clean and renewable more generally.

According to Encyclis, they intend to produce a minimum of 300 megawatts of sustainable electricity and local heat supply by the end of the decade.

The company currently produces 160 megawatts of sustainable baseload electricity each year. Further, their residual waste processing capacity is approximately 1.5 million tonnes (across their waste to energy facilities) annually.

Reportedly, Encyclis aims to replace diesel with HVO for use in its other waste to energy facilities following more long-term performance testing.
