If your radiator isn’t heating up properly, the cause could be something as simple as trapped air or a closed valve. Other problems, such as sludge, poor circulation or an unbalanced heating system, may require more attention. Fortunately, how your radiators are heating can provide useful clues about what’s wrong.

Start by checking how many radiators are affected and where they feel cold. A cold top often points to trapped air, while a cold bottom can indicate sludge or poor circulation. If one radiator is completely cold, the problem may be limited to that radiator, while several cold radiators can point to an issue elsewhere in the heating system.

Why is my radiator cold at the top?

A radiator that’s warm at the bottom but cold towards the top usually has air trapped inside it.

Hot water cannot fill the entire radiator because the trapped air occupies the upper section. You may also hear gurgling or bubbling as the heating operates.

Bleeding the radiator releases this air and allows hot water to circulate through the entire radiator again.

How to bleed a cold radiator

Bleeding a radiator is a straightforward maintenance task you can normally do yourself.

First, identify which radiators have cold areas while the heating is running. Then switch the heating off and allow the radiators to cool before opening a bleed valve. This reduces the risk of hot water escaping while you’re working.

Use a radiator key to slowly open the bleed valve at the top of the radiator, holding a cloth and container underneath it. You should hear a hissing sound as trapped air escapes. Once water begins flowing steadily, close the valve again.

If you’ve bled several radiators, check the boiler pressure afterwards. Bleeding can lower the pressure in a sealed heating system, so you may need to repressurise it according to the boiler manufacturer’s instructions.

What if a radiator is still cold after bleeding?

If you’ve successfully released trapped air but the radiator remains cold, continuing to bleed it probably won’t help.

Check that both radiator valves are open. If they are, possible causes include:

  • A stuck or faulty valve
  • Sludge or another blockage
  • Poor system balance
  • Inadequate water circulation
  • A wider heating-system fault

The location of the remaining cold area is useful. If the top now heats normally but the bottom remains cold, sludge or poor circulation becomes more likely.

If the radiator repeatedly fills with air again soon after bleeding, that also deserves investigation. Radiators needing unusually frequent bleeding can be a sign of sludge or a system leak. 

Why is my radiator hot at the top but cold at the bottom?

This is essentially the opposite problem.

If the radiator is hot at the top but cold along the bottom, trapped air probably isn’t responsible. A common cause is sludge or debris collecting in the lower part of the radiator.

Central-heating sludge forms as water reacts with metal components in the heating system. Rust and other debris can gradually accumulate and settle in radiators and pipework.

As the layer becomes thicker, hot water cannot circulate properly through the bottom of the radiator.

Poor circulation can produce similar symptoms, so a cold bottom doesn’t prove that the radiator contains sludge.

Should you bleed a radiator that’s cold at the bottom?

Usually not as the first response.

Bleeding removes air from the top of a radiator. It doesn’t remove sludge that has accumulated at the bottom.

If the radiator is consistently cold along the bottom, the heating system may need cleaning or flushing. It’s recommended to have an installer flush the system where sludge or debris is responsible for the cold area. 

A heating engineer can assess the condition of the system and determine what level of cleaning is appropriate. A heavily contaminated system may require more extensive cleaning than a radiator with a relatively small amount of debris.

Why is only one radiator not heating up?

If every other radiator works normally, start by looking for a problem specific to the cold radiator.

Trapped air is one possibility, particularly if the radiator is cold at the top.

Also check the radiator valves. Make sure the thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) hasn’t simply been turned down or switched off.

A valve can also become stuck after remaining closed for a long period, particularly when the heating hasn’t been used over the summer. Trapped air and a stuck radiator valve are two common reasons why an individual radiator remains cold.

If the valves appear to be open and bleeding doesn’t solve the problem, there may be a blockage or another circulation problem that needs professional attention.

Why are some radiators hot and others cold?

Radiators don’t necessarily heat at exactly the same speed, but large differences throughout the house can indicate that the central-heating system is unbalanced.

Balancing controls how much hot water flows through each radiator. If too much water travels through radiators close to the boiler, for example, radiators elsewhere in the system may receive insufficient flow.

A system can become unbalanced after radiators have been removed and reinstalled, because of sludge or debris, or because radiator valves have been incorrectly adjusted. 

Balancing isn’t the same as bleeding.

Bleeding removes trapped air. Balancing adjusts the distribution of hot water throughout the system.

If radiators consistently heat at very different rates despite being bled and their TRVs being correctly set, consider having the system professionally balanced.

Why are all my radiators cold?

If none of the radiators are heating, it’s unlikely that every radiator developed an individual problem at the same time.

Start with a few basic checks.

Check the thermostat

Make sure the thermostat is switched on and set higher than the current room temperature.

If you use a programmable thermostat or smart heating control, check that the heating schedule hasn’t been changed or disabled.

Check the boiler

Confirm that the boiler is switched on and isn’t displaying a fault code.

If a fault code appears, check the manufacturer’s instructions rather than repeatedly resetting the boiler. The code may help identify whether professional attention is required.

Check the boiler pressure

If you have a sealed heating system, check its pressure gauge or display.

Low boiler pressure can prevent the heating system from operating normally. The correct pressure varies between boilers, so follow the instructions for your particular model rather than relying on a universal figure.

If the pressure repeatedly falls after being restored, there may be a leak or another system fault that requires investigation.

Check whether you have hot water

Whether your hot water is still working can provide another useful clue.

If you have a combi boiler and still have hot water from your taps but none of the radiators heat up, the boiler is still producing heat. The fault may therefore involve the heating controls or a component responsible for directing or circulating water through the central-heating system.

Problems with components inside the boiler aren’t DIY repairs. Have a Gas Safe registered engineer investigate if the basic controls and pressure checks don’t solve the problem.

Could a thermostatic radiator valve be the problem?

A TRV controls how much hot water enters a radiator based on the temperature setting.

Before assuming the radiator is faulty, make sure the TRV hasn’t been turned down.

If the radiator stays completely cold even at a higher setting, the valve may be stuck or faulty. This can be particularly noticeable when the heating is switched back on after several months of warmer weather.

The valve on the opposite end of the radiator (normally the lockshield valve) also controls water flow. Incorrect adjustment can affect how well the radiator heats and contribute to an unbalanced system.

If you’re unsure whether a valve is stuck or incorrectly adjusted, have a heating engineer check it rather than forcing the mechanism.

Do cold radiators need a powerflush?

Not necessarily.

A cold radiator doesn’t automatically mean the entire heating system needs a powerflush. Trapped air, a closed valve or an unbalanced system can all produce heating problems without requiring extensive cleaning.

Even where sludge is present, the appropriate cleaning method depends on the extent and location of the contamination.

A heating engineer should assess the system before recommending a powerflush or another cleaning method. Be cautious about diagnosing the need for a powerflush solely because one radiator has a cold spot.

When should you call a heating engineer?

Basic checks such as adjusting the thermostat, checking TRVs and bleeding a radiator are reasonable homeowner tasks.

Professional help is more appropriate when radiators remain cold after these checks, several radiators have persistent cold spots, the system repeatedly loses pressure, valves need repair, sludge appears widespread, or the boiler displays a fault that cannot be resolved using the manufacturer’s instructions.

You should also call an engineer if you suspect a boiler component or circulation pump is responsible.

Don’t remove the boiler casing or attempt internal boiler repairs yourself.
