A range of statistics released this year from online data platform Statista highlights a drop in UK domestic energy use for 2022.

With higher prices in recent years, it is not so surprising that 2022 saw at least a small drop in energy usage stats.

According to data from Statista, total UK household electricity use dropped from 106.9 terawatt-hours in 2021 to 96.27 terawatt-hours in 2022, representing a 10% drop.

When it comes to natural gas, Statista data shows consumption fell from 76.9 billion cubic meters to 70.9 billion cubic meters between 2021 and 2022. Natural gas use fell further in 2023 to 63.5 billion cubic meters.

Separate statistics from Statista have shown a year-on-year increase in household gas expenditure in the UK since 2020.

Total household gas expenditure stood at £11.6 billion in 2020 before rising to £12.9 billion in 2021 and £20.2 billion in 2022. This figure rose further to £24.9 billion last year.

Statista research expects a notable decline in UK gas prices for the 2024/25 period. This follows a substantial prices decline from £2.11 per therm to £1 a therm. Their research also suggests a decline in electricity prices in the coming years.
