The government has tasked the National Energy System Operator (NESO) with creating an energy spatial plan in 2026.

NESO as a public corporation launched on October 1st and now operates the UK electricity and gas distribution systems.

UK, Scottish and Welsh Energy Ministers have commissioned the newly formed nationalised energy system operator with creating a plan out to mid-century.

This plan would act as a strategic approach to laying out the locations for new energy infrastructure across the UK.

According to a Tuesday GOV.UK press release, this plan will help hasten the government’s mission to make the UK a clean energy superpower.

The press release also highlights how a more strategic approach can lower total system costs and grid connection waiting times.

NESO is set to come up with several versions of a future UK energy system. These options will be presented to ministers before one plan is selected. This option will then be subject to public consultation and extensive environmental reviews.
