How the calculator works

The amount borrowed is the boiler price minus your deposit. UK APRs are annual rates that already include compounding, so the monthly rate is worked out from the APR rather than by dividing it by 12. The payment is the fixed amount that clears the loan, with interest, over the term you choose, rounded to the penny.

Monthly rate = (1 + APR)^(1/12) − 1. Monthly payment = amount borrowed × monthly rate ÷ (1 − (1 + monthly rate)^−months).

At 0% the payment is simply the amount borrowed divided by the number of months. Lenders sometimes adjust the first or last payment by a few pence so the total comes out exactly.

Boiler finance: common questions

How does boiler finance work?

The installer acts as a credit broker and introduces you to a lender. You choose a boiler, pay any deposit, and borrow the rest as a fixed-rate loan repaid monthly. The lender runs a credit check before approving you. You then have 14 days to withdraw from the credit agreement.

Is 0% boiler finance really free?

Yes, if you make every payment on time: you repay the cash price and nothing more. The catch is usually elsewhere. 0% is often limited to selected boilers or to terms of 4 years or less, and a higher boiler price can cost more than the interest you avoid. Compare the cash price with other installers before choosing a 0% deal.

What does "representative APR" mean?

It is the rate at least 51% of accepted applicants will get. The rest may be offered a higher rate, or a smaller loan, depending on their credit history. Use this calculator with a few different APRs to see how much the rate matters.

Can I pay off boiler finance early?

Yes. You have a legal right to repay a consumer credit agreement early, and you stop paying interest on what you repay. The lender can charge compensation of up to 1% of the amount repaid early if more than a year is left, or 0.5% if less. Many 0% plans charge nothing.

Does applying for boiler finance affect my credit score?

A full application usually leaves a hard search on your credit file, which other lenders can see. Some installers run a soft eligibility check first, which does not. Avoid several full applications in a short time, and remember that missed payments will harm your credit record.

Can I get boiler finance with bad credit?

Sometimes. Installers that work with a panel of lenders can pass a declined application to a second lender, but expect a higher APR or a smaller loan. If you receive certain benefits, check whether you qualify for a free or subsidised boiler through the ECO4 scheme before borrowing.

Is a monthly boiler plan the same as finance?

Not quite. Some companies rent or supply the boiler on a monthly plan that also covers servicing and repairs, and the payment often rises every year. For example, £45 a month rising by 3.99% a year adds up to about £6,480 over 10 years, compared with £5,400 if it stayed flat. Compare the total over the full term with a loan plus separate boiler cover.

How accurate is this calculator?

It uses the standard way UK lenders turn an APR into monthly payments. Worcester Bosch's published example, £2,100 borrowed over 120 months at 10.9% APR, comes out here at £28.21 a month, the same as the lender's figure. Your actual payments can differ by a few pence depending on when the first payment is due.
